The memory of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers is a significant part of the national code of every Belarusian. This was stated by the Chairman of the Regional Executive Committee, Alexander Subbotin, during a rally on Victory Square, dedicated to the Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus, the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders in the Great Patriotic War.
"The memory of the people's feat lives not only in the hearts of those who fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, fought the enemy in the rear, and selflessly provided the defenders of the Motherland with everything necessary for Victory. This memory has been inherited by their children and grandchildren. It is a core element of the spiritual creation of the people. And as long as we remember ourselves, we simply have no right to forget about those who fell on the battlefields, were tortured in Nazi concentration camps, went missing, about all those thanks to whose immortal feat we built our independent state," noted Alexander Subbotin and proposed to honor the memory of the fallen with a minute of silence.
The head of the regional authorities recalled the words of the President, spoken on the eve of Independence Day: "We celebrate Independence Day under a clear sky and cherish it very much. We are doing everything to pay our debt to the generation of victors with peace, who gave us 80 years of this peaceful life. We are doing everything to justify their hopes. Otherwise, what did they die for? Belarus under a clear sky is both the goal of our entire policy and the image of the future we strive for!"
A solemn laying of wreaths and flowers took place at the memorial complex in honor of the Soviet soldiers-liberators, partisans and underground fighters of the Vitebsk region on Victory Square. The rally was also attended by the Chairman of the Regional Council of Deputies Dmitry Demidov, the Aide to the President - Inspector for the Vitebsk Region Vladimir Yurgevich, the Chairman of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee Alexey Geroev, the Chairman of the City Council of Deputies Olga Ivanova, members of the Council of the Republic and deputies of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, labor collectives, and residents of the city.
