Regional Agricultural and Food Department: Corn harvesting in Vitebsk region to be completed by November 1
"All efforts of the agricultural enterprises of the region have been directed towards corn harvesting to complete this work by November 1. The region's farmers have already harvested corn from 72 thousand hectares, which accounts for 86% of the total area occupied by this crop," the regional agricultural committee reported.
A total of about 78 thousand tons of corn has been harvested, including 7.5 thousand tons for grain. The average yield across the region was 190 centners per hectare, and the yield of corn for grain was 61.6 centners per hectare.
The harvesting of vegetables is also nearing completion. Potatoes, onions, and carrots have already been gathered from the fields. Only late-ripening varieties of cabbage remain, whose harvesting time has not yet arrived. The region's farmers harvested the "second bread" from 1746 hectares. The potato harvest amounted to 53.5 thousand tons, with an average yield across the region of 307 centners per hectare.
As soon as the corn harvest is completed, workers of the region's agro-industrial complex will redeploy machinery and personnel to plow the fallow land. The set plan of 246 thousand hectares is also scheduled to be completed by November 1. Nevertheless, autumn plowing is currently underway. As of October 25, about 71 thousand hectares of agricultural land have been plowed, which constitutes 29% of the plan.
The regional agricultural committee emphasized that plowing of fallow land will continue in November under favorable weather conditions, after the main task is completed. Thus, the large-scale work carried out in the fields this autumn will yield results in the spring, relieving farmers of additional work and subsequently helping to increase the region's overall harvest.
