In 2022, it is planned to acquire a hydraulic engineering machine for cleaning and deepening the Vitba River in Vitebsk. In the near future, the task is to expand the fleet of similar specialized equipment by involving districts in improving the ecological state of small water bodies in the Vitebsk region, especially those located in settlements.

The head of the region, Nikolai Sherstnev, drew attention to these problems. Compared to other regions, the Vitebsk region is the most обеспеченной with water resources. However, small water bodies in the regions have become overgrown, which looks especially unaesthetic in settlements, stated the chairman of the regional executive committee.

— The chairman of the city executive committee, Nikolai Orlov, and I have agreed that Vitebsk will purchase such a machine for cleaning the river from pollution and biomass. It may operate throughout the region, but one machine will not solve the problem. It is necessary for the districts to get involved and, if possible, unite to purchase several machines, — said Nikolai Sherstnev.

According to Viktor Galanov, chairman of the regional committee for natural resources and environmental protection, in recent years there has been a trend of deterioration of the ecological state of the Vitba River, which experiences all the hardships of an urban water body, receiving storm runoff from streets, squares, and residential areas. In addition, during the hot and dry period, the water in the river heats up significantly, partly due to weak flow. This contributes to its gradual overgrowth and a decrease in the aesthetic and recreational value of the watercourse.

In total, there are 3 large (Western Dvina, Dnieper, Berezina), 2 medium (Viliya, Drut) and 616 small rivers flowing through the region.
