Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Belarus
In September 2015, UN member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Agenda 2030).
The Agenda includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their 169 associated targets, which are to be achieved by 2030. Progress in achieving the Goals will be monitored and tracked using a set of global indicators.
The adoption of Agenda 2030 required all states to review and specify national plans and mechanisms for achieving sustainable societal development, taking into account the SDGs.
Belarus is committed to implementing Agenda 2030 and has already taken a number of important steps to implement it at the national level. In order to form a clear mechanism for the implementation of Agenda 2030 and to carry out overall coordination of activities for Belarus to achieve the SDGs, the President of the Republic of Belarus has made a decision to appoint Anatoly Isachenko, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, as the National Coordinator for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Under the leadership of the National Coordinator, a Council for Sustainable Development has been formed, comprising representatives of government bodies and organizations at the deputy head level. The possibility of involving representatives of business circles, public associations, and international organizations in the Council's work is envisaged. The National Coordinator will organize the consideration of various aspects of SDG implementation within the Council and will annually report to the President and the Government on the progress of SDG implementation, as well as make recommendations to improve the effectiveness of this work.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides support for the activities of the National Coordinator and the Council for Sustainable Development.
