Historical Background
With the attainment of sovereignty, the Republic of Belarus faced the need to protect its interests at the state border. For this purpose, on September 15, 1992, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus adopted Resolution No. 562 on the creation of border troops of the Republic of Belarus and border units in the Baltic direction.
On September 24, 1992, the Commander of the Border Troops of the Republic of Belarus signed Order No. 012 "On the Approval of the Staff of the Polotsk Border Detachment."
The detachment was formed in the Vetrino military town of the Polotsk district on the basis of an ad hoc management group and was staffed by officers and ensigns – border guards transferred from other regions of the former Soviet Union and officers and ensigns of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Belarus.
Border commandant's offices were formed in Verkhnedvinsk, Kupcheli village of Braslav district, and Postavy. The border guards were tasked with ensuring border protection in the section with the Latvian and Lithuanian Republics.
As early as February 1, 1993, the units of the border detachment began guarding the State Border of the Republic of Belarus.
During this period, the situation at the republic's border was constantly changing dynamically. Smugglers tried to use any loopholes for their illegal activities. Their allies were the imperfection of legislation and the lack of engineering equipment at the border. Soldiers in green caps had to literally find the most effective ways and methods of border protection on the go. Despite everything, the border guards managed to timely cover the unprotected sections of the border after the collapse of the USSR and ensure their reliable protection.
Today, the Polotsk Border Detachment guards a section of the border with the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of Lithuania, approximately 271 kilometers long, with the Belarusian-Latvian section being over 172 km and with the Lithuanian Republic – 98 km.
