Committee for Labor, Employment and Social Protection: in the Vitebsk region, more than 300 facilities will be equipped with a comprehensive barrier-free environment by 2025

In 2021-2025, 309 various facilities in the Vitebsk region, including socially significant ones, will be equipped with a comprehensive barrier-free environment. This was announced to journalists at a meeting of the regional interdepartmental working group on disability issues by Vera Astapenko, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee for Labor, Employment and Social Protection of the Regional Executive Committee.

"This year, a comfortable barrier-free environment has been created in all district territorial social service centers, their day care units for people with disabilities, and boarding schools in the region. Our plans are to improve it as much as possible. Tactile tiles, ramps, handrails, warning strips before stairs, guiding strips inside buildings, sanitary rooms for people with disabilities, and parking spaces for people with disabilities equipped in front of buildings – all this is part of a modern comprehensive barrier-free environment. Where some of the listed elements are missing, they will be added," said Vera Astapenko.

The immediate plans include completing the barrier-free environment in the 24-hour care units for people with disabilities.

Over the past five-year period, a barrier-free environment has been created at 470 facilities in the Vitebsk region, which is twice as many as planned. "As a rule, the number of facilities with convenient access for people with disabilities increases every year. The Committee for Labor, Employment and Social Protection of the Regional Executive Committee works closely in this direction with enterprises and organizations of the region. They equip the barrier-free environment at their own expense or with the involvement of sponsorship," added Vera Astapenko.
