Fewer road accidents in Vitebsk region

For the past four months of 2017, compared to the same period last year, 77 road traffic accidents occurred in the Vitebsk region, which is 40 accidents less than during the analyzed period of last year. As a result, 18 (24) people died, and 88 (125) were injured, including 5 (9) children.

Due to drunk drivers, 1 (2) person died and 2 (17) people were injured.

Due to pedestrians, 13 (25) road traffic accidents occurred, in which 5 (10) people died and 8 (15) were injured. 8 (11) pedestrians were intoxicated.

For example, on 05/10/2017, on the Vitebsk-Gomel-Ukraine border highway in the village of Svetlye, a road traffic accident occurred, which, according to preliminary data, was caused by a drunk pedestrian who was crossing the roadway outside the designated area. As a result, he was hit by a MAZ "5440" car. The injured pedestrian was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. An investigation is currently underway.

4 (17) road traffic accidents occurred with drivers who fled the scene of the accident, resulting in 0 (2) deaths and 4 (17) injuries.

On 04/16/2017, a man walking on the right edge of the roadway, marked with reflective elements, was hit on the Lepel-Polotsk-Russian Federation border highway in the village of Belchitsa. As a result, the man sustained bodily injuries and was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the healthcare institution "City Hospital-2". The perpetrator of the accident fled the scene. Subsequently, through the search efforts of the traffic police of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee's Internal Affairs Directorate, the identity of the driver who caused the accident was established. A criminal case has been initiated under Part 2 of Article 317 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus.

Due to persons without a driver's license, 3 (14) road traffic accidents occurred, resulting in 1 (3) death and 4 (14) injuries. Of these, 0 (7) persons without a driver's license were intoxicated at the time of the accident.

On 02/04/2017, a road traffic accident occurred in the Postavy district due to a driver without a license who lost control and collided with

automobiles "Toyota - Yaris". As a result of the accident, a passenger in the vehicle of the perpetrator of the accident was injured.

Due to the fault of cyclists, 3 (0) accidents occurred, resulting in 1 (0) death and 2 (0) injuries. One cyclist was riding a bicycle while intoxicated.

Thus, on 23.03.2017, on Marii Oktyabrskoy Street in Liozno, due to the fault of a drunk cyclist, a road traffic accident occurred, who fell off his bicycle under the wheels of a "MAZ-320" automobile. As a result of the accident, the cyclist sustained bodily injuries and was hospitalized in the surgical department of the Central Regional Hospital.

For the analyzed period of 2017 (2016), 35 (45) criminal cases were initiated in the region under Art. 317 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, and 29 (52) under Art. 317-1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus.
