A few words and figures about crime

Measures taken by prosecutors of Vitebsk region together with other law enforcement and state bodies ensure the maintenance of the proper level of legality and law and order in the region.

Over the past few years, the region has seen a positive trend of crime reduction (Over the last 10 years, the number of committed crimes has decreased by 44% (from 17,572 in 2010 to 9,847 in 2019), over 5 years - by 12.8% (from 11,297 in 2015 to 9,847 in 2019)).

In the current year (for 5 months), there has also been a decrease in both overall crime (a total of 3,639 crimes were registered in the region, which is 12.1% less than in the same period last year (4,139)),   and crime in the criminal investigation line (- 6.2%)).

The crime rate per 10,000 population in the Vitebsk region is below the national average (for 5 months of 2020, this indicator in the region was 30.9, and in general across the republic - 33.6).

The region is seeing a decrease in serious and particularly serious crimes (from 554 to 332; -40.1%), a reduction in the number of crimes committed in public places (from 678 to 506), by persons with a criminal record (from 1074 to 985), by a group of persons (from 226 to 173). Fewer murders, attempted murders, hooliganism, robberies, aggravated robberies, and car thefts have been committed.

The active stance of the prosecutor's office and other law enforcement agencies ensures the effective suppression of illegal activities in the region by corrupt individuals.

However, it should be noted that there are a number of negative trends in the operational situation, the elimination of which is a priority task for the current period.

In certain regions, over the 5 months of 2020, there has been an increase in overall crime (in Gorodok (+11.6%), Beshenkovichi (+10.2%), Vitebsk (+9.2%), Tolochin (+4.9%) districts).

The proportion of crimes committed while intoxicated remains high in the region.

The situation with people dying from external factors requires constant attention.

Taking into account the developing operational situation,

of emerging threats to public safety by prosecutors, and further coordination of law enforcement activities will be carried out.
