Learning to empathize: a lesson in memory of the tragedy in the burned village of Ola was held in Vitebsk

The unified lesson "Ola - a sister of Khatyn" was held in all schools of the republic, and students of Gymnasium No. 2 from Vitebsk also joined it.

In Ola, more than 1.7 thousand people were killed, burned alive, including 950 children. The oldest villager on that tragic day was 110 years old, the youngest - a few weeks old. The Nazis spared no one. Only eight residents of the village survived, and all of them have already passed away. This is just one of the facts of the genocide policy of the fascist occupation authorities towards the Belarusian people, and they pursued such a policy throughout the entire war.

Many Vitebsk gymnasium students learned the history of the settlement of Ola from the Gomel region only today, although they are well acquainted with the topic of destroyed villages. There are 170 sisters of Khatyn in the Vitebsk region that have never been revived. "We are talking about this not only so that you remember those events and so that they do not happen again. The purpose of today's lesson is to learn to empathize with your country as a whole and with those strangers who were part of our people and who were killed for nothing, simply because our enemies wanted it that way," Deputy Prosecutor of the Vitebsk region Vladimir Guk told the children.
He added that the investigation into the criminal case of the genocide of the Belarusian people is ongoing. Studying documents, prosecutors discover new facts and find new villages that have disappeared from the map of Belarus forever. "In December 2023, the village of Gritskovo, now in the Verkhnedvinsk district, and during the war years - in the Osvyey district, was included in the official list of such settlements," Vladimir Guk noted.
Vitebsk schoolchildren shared their opinions on why such lessons should be held, why it is important to know one's history, and they all agreed that such events should never happen again on the peaceful Vitebsk land and in the long-suffering Belarus. In memory of the victims of fascist atrocities, the children lit candles.-
