CEC: Seven people are running to become candidates for President of Belarus
Seven people are claiming to be candidates for President of the Republic of Belarus. This was announced to journalists by the Chairman of the Central Election Commission Igor Karpenko, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.
"In total, 11 applications were submitted to the Central Election Commission. We registered 7 initiative groups. Four were denied for various reasons. An incomplete package of documents was provided. In addition, some had fewer members in their initiative group than provided for by law, after verifying the authenticity of the submitted information," Igor Karpenko noted. "There were some cases where deceased citizens were included. There were citizens with inaccurate data in their surnames and passport details. For one of the contenders, firstly, the list was not very large - 115 surnames, and when 39 were rejected, in this case, registration could not take place."
The next stage of the election campaign - the collection of signatures in support of the nomination of candidates for President - will begin on November 7 and will end on December 6, 2024. Registered initiative groups must collect at least 100,000 signatures.
The presidential election in Belarus is scheduled for January 26, 2025.
