The elimination of existing stocks of unsuitable pesticides has begun in the Vitebsk region
In the Vitebsk region, the elimination of existing stockpiles of unusable pesticides has begun within the framework of the international technical assistance project "Sustainable Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants and Chemicals in the Republic of Belarus, GEF-6" (hereinafter referred to as the project).
The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus in cooperation with UNDP in Belarus. It is funded by the Global Environment Facility.
In 17 districts of the region, as a legacy of past decades, over 500 tons of unusable or banned pesticides have accumulated, including those classified as persistent organic pollutants (mainly DDT and HCH). Some of the unusable pesticides were generated by agricultural enterprises due to the expiration of agrochemical shelf life.
This year, the company Geocoma carried out repackaging of unusable pesticides. Their export to Hamburg, Germany, to the specialized enterprise for environmentally safe disposal of hazardous waste AVG GmbH has begun. Loading is carried out by the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
On October 14, 2021, a batch of unusable pesticides will be sent to Germany from the warehouse of JSC "Sharkovshchina Agrotechservice" (Sharkovshchina urban settlement) with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus A.N. Korbut, UNDP Project Coordinator in Belarus I.I. Chulba, and Project Manager D.A. Kovalenko.
By the end of October 2021, 12 organizations in the Vitebsk region will be relieved of the need for further storage of unusable pesticides.
The export of unusable pesticides for environmentally safe disposal is planned to be completed in 2022.
