After prolonged rains, which significantly delayed sowing, seeders are returning to the country's fields.

Last Friday, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko heard a detailed report from the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Ivan Krupko, on the developing situation due to unfavorable weather conditions. Among the main problematic issues is the delayed sowing of winter crops. Following the report, Alexander Lukashenko issued a number of instructions. In particular, he instructed the government, the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, together with the governors, to intensify agricultural work and, if possible, to carry out winter crop sowing until late evening to make the most of favorable weather days. The number one task is to sow winter crops within a week.

According to the republican summary, as of yesterday, 49.2% of the planned areas had been sown in the Vitebsk region. For comparison, in the Brest region – 55.2%, Grodno region – 53.8%, Minsk region – 51%, Mogilev region – 48.6%, Gomel region – 41.5%.

Adverse weather also affected the situation at the Vitebsk Zonal Institute of Agriculture of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus – the seeder was idle due to waterlogged soil. According to Lyubov Kartavenkova, head of the department at VZISKh, before the rains, more than 200 hectares were allocated for winter crops – triticale, rye, barley, which is half of the planned area. In the coming week, it is planned to sow almost 200 hectares of wheat. Machine operator Sergey Ignatiev (in the photo) copes with a daily norm of 40 hectares.

According to the scientist, considering that autumn has been quite long in recent years, winter wheat can be sown calmly until October 5-7. The main thing is that 40 days pass from the emergence of shoots to permanent frosts. In this case, the crop will tolerate winter well.

In the past harvest, winter crops at VZISKh yielded a good harvest: wheat – 58 c/ha, triticale – 52 c/ha, rye – over 50 c/ha.
