The Gorodok pesticide burial site in the Vitebsk region is planned to be eliminated in 2014
Previously, scientists discovered traces of the burial site in nearby water bodies. Its elimination will be carried out in accordance with the action plan for liquidation at the expense of the local budget.
The elimination of unusable pesticide burial sites is carried out in accordance with the national plan for the implementation of Belarus's obligations under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). The first stage of the plan was implemented in 2007-2010, in accordance with which the Gershon burial site of unusable pesticides in the Brest region was eliminated. In 2013, according to the second stage of the national plan for 2011-2015, work on the elimination of the Slonim burial site of unusable pesticides in the Grodno region was completed. It was the largest in the republic. 2013 tons of unusable pesticides were extracted from the ground and repacked.
The Stockholm Convention is an international agreement aimed at defining requirements for the management of POPs, as well as protecting human health and the environment from such pollutants. The Convention was adopted in Stockholm on May 22, 2001; the document was ratified by 170 countries. In 2003, Belarus joined the agreement.
