The operation of the solid municipal waste management complex has been launched in Novopolotsk
Today, the Novopolotsk regional solid municipal waste management complex was solemnly launched. The event, important for the Vitebsk region, was attended by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, Sergey Maslyak, the First Deputy Minister of Housing and Communal Services of the Republic of Belarus, Andrey Beketa, the Deputy Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Dmitry Petrusha, and the Chairman of the Novopolotsk City Executive Committee, Igor Burmistrov.
– In 2025, by the government's directive, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection developed and approved a waste management strategy. The main goal is the phased achievement of a waste utilization rate of at least 70% by 2030 and at least 90% by 2040. Over the past five years, 6 regional sites and waste sorting plants for solid municipal waste have been commissioned in our country. The waste management system is in place but requires certain modernization, from separate waste collection and logistics to sorting, processing, and disposal, – emphasized Sergey Maslyak.
In the next 5 years, it is planned to commission 7 more facilities and begin construction of two more. In the Vitebsk region, after 11 months, the waste utilization rate is over 50%. The commissioned complex is the third in the region for municipal solid waste management.
The new Novopolotsk regional solid municipal waste management complex is planned to sort up to 80 thousand tons of waste per year. The complex will serve Polotsk and Novopolotsk, as well as three districts – Polotsky, Rossonsky, and Ushachsky.
The complex includes phased semi-automatic sorting of mixed municipal solid waste with the extraction of secondary material resources, composting, processing of heavily contaminated polymer waste, processing of bulky and wood waste, processing of construction waste, and thermal destruction of biological and medical waste.
