Regional Agricultural Products Department: How corn harvesting is progressing in the Vitebsk region
In the Vitebsk region, the harvesting of corn for silage began recently, but farms are trying to speed up the process – after all, frosts are imminent. This can reduce yields and degrade the quality of green mass. As of the morning of September 20, farms in the region had harvested only 16 percent of the 91 thousand hectares of this crop.

Corn is a heat-loving plant, for which the biologically active temperature is above 10 degrees. When it gets colder, growth and development processes practically stop, emphasized **Yuri Romanov, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture, Crop Production and Fodder Production of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee's Agriculture and Food Committee:**
— Frosts of 2-3 degrees damage the leaves. Frozen plants rot very quickly. For now, we are only harvesting for silage and green feed; it's too early to talk about grain. Everything will depend on autumn, whether it ripens to waxy ripeness. But we plan to harvest about 5 thousand hectares and obtain 30 thousand tons of amber grain. 282 thousand tons of corn silage have been harvested. The yield of green mass is currently 223 centners, but it is growing because we are immediately harvesting the worst plots for feed. Considering all indicators, we should collect 1.8 million tons.
In the Polotsk district, 31 percent of the corn has been harvested. Among the first to start silage preparation were the agricultural workers of OJSC "Noviye Goryany," where 150 hectares are sown.
— So far, the corn has yielded 240 centners per hectare, but frosts have already occurred, and the total yield will be about 30 percent less. We are not harvesting for grain. In general, few in the Vitebsk region, given our weather conditions, focus on this. We need to wait for full ripeness, harvest within specific deadlines, and properly prepare for storage to preserve the grain. It is indeed the best milk-producing feed, — noted **Leonid Murashko, Director of OJSC "Noviye Goryany."**
Good results in corn yieldCorn for silage in the Vitebsk region. "Olgovskoye" received 280 centners per hectare, "Mazolovo-Gaz" - 300. The highest yield not only in the region, but also in the oblast, is at the unitary enterprise "Rudakovo" - 307 centners per hectare.
— There is no big secret: the application of mineral fertilizers, in particular nitrogen, plus the use of German high-yield hybrid varieties. If breeders plan for an output of 350-400 centners of green mass, then with the observance of sowing technologies, care, thermal regime and the application of the necessary fertilizers, these hybrids consistently maintain the lower yield level. This year, the sun blazed for a month and a half, there was no moisture, so we only got 307 centners, — said **Denis Tereshkov, Deputy Director for Crop Production at UP "Rudakovo".**
Mechanizer of the "Vesna-Energo" branch of the Republican Unitary Enterprise of Electric Power Industry "Vitebskenergo" Nikolai Strienok and driver Viktor Andreev harvesting corn.
Corn is to be harvested from an area of about 1.9 thousand hectares, about 300 of which are planned to be left for grain.
— According to calculations, we should eventually receive at least 250 centners per round, lay about 40 thousand tons of silage and about 1.5 thousand tons of corn grain. So, cattle will have a hearty winter, — Denis Vladimirovich is convinced.
Thanks to the introduction of lactogenic feeds into the diet, milk yields should be high, and consequently, wages will be decent. Those who work with full commitment on the main types of work are not offended by wages at "Rudakovo": agricultural workers receive up to two thousand rubles per month.
