Regional Health Department: Vitebsk Oncology Dispensary building to be repurposed for COVID-19 patients

The surgical building of the Vitebsk Regional Oncology Center is being prepared for repurposing from November 16 to receive patients with COVID-19, reported Mikhail Vishnevetsky, head of the main healthcare department of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee.

According to him, there is an active increase in the incidence of the disease in the Vitebsk region. Hospitalization in both Vitebsk and the region exceeds discharge. "The regional center is currently coping with the bed capacity that has already been repurposed. At the same time, we are preparing the surgical building of the oncology center starting Monday," stated the head of the department.

Mikhail Vishnevetsky emphasized that the situation is under control, including in the regions of the oblast. "It's not the case that district hospitals are completely repurposed. They still make their own decisions about suspending planned hospitalization or continuing it. Everything depends on the epidemiological situation. All chief physicians work in close cooperation and, if necessary, make decisions about redirecting patients to hospitals in other districts so that primary care does not suffer and a tense situation is not created. There is a sufficient supply of medications, ventilators, and oxygen points," he stated.

The head of the department also noted that at the last meeting of the regional headquarters for countering the spread of COVID-19, a decision was made to independently introduce a mask regime by the administrations of cities and districts, taking into account the epidemiological situation. As of the morning of November 12, such decisions are in effect in Polotsk, Orsha, Miory, and Shumilino districts, and Novopolotsk.
