Regional Health Department: Surgeons in the Vitebsk region perform laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for the first time
On June 29, a team of surgeons from the VOKSTs and staff from the Department of General Surgery of VSMU performed the first laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in the Vitebsk region on a 43-year-old female patient weighing 138 kg.
Sleeve gastrectomy, also known as sleeve gastroplasty, is a type of restrictive surgery. It involves reducing the volume of food consumed by surgically reducing the size of the stomach, thereby ensuring a limited dietary regimen.
Despite its apparent simplicity, the operation requires a high level of qualification and experience from the surgeon. The formed stomach tube must be narrow, straight, and uniform, with an internal diameter of approximately 1.5-2 cm. If the tube is made narrower, fluid will pass poorly; if it is wider, the effect will be insufficient.
Despite the availability of alternative methods, sleeve gastroplasty (over 50% of all operations) remains the primary method for treating morbid obesity in current global practice.
