Nearly 3 Million Pike Fry Released into Braslav Lakes to Restore Ecosystem

14.05.2026

This spring, the lakes of the Braslav region received a significant boost: nearly three million pike fry were released into the waters. This is not a one-off event, but part of systematic efforts to preserve the region's natural wealth and develop its fisheries.

Maintaining biodiversity is one of the key objectives of the Braslav Lakes National Park. To ensure the ecosystem remains resilient, specialists regularly stock the reservoirs. This work is carried out based on scientific recommendations and in strict accordance with the rules of fisheries management.

Once every four years, young of the most significant fish species – pike, carp, and crucian carp – are released into the lakes. This season, the focus is on the predator. The fish stock was purchased from the Novinki fish farm in the Postavy district. Funding is provided by proceeds from the sale of permits for paid recreational fishing. Thus, anglers themselves contribute to the restoration of natural resources.

The main attention was paid to large bodies of water popular among fishing enthusiasts. For instance, over 300,000 fry were released into Drivyaty, and about 400,000 into Buju and Voiso each. Lake Berezhye was replenished with 200,000 individuals, Volos Severny and Yuzhny with 539,000, and Potekh with 270,000.

The stocking process was supervised by specialists and involved representatives from district and environmental protection services. This approach ensures the transparency of the process and compliance with all environmental standards.

The work does not end here. A second phase of stocking is planned for the autumn, when a new batch of fry will be introduced into the reservoirs.

Preserving natural wealth is a task not only for specialists but also for everyone who visits the Braslav Lakes. And today, it can be confidently stated that through joint efforts, this unique ecosystem is given a chance for the future.
