Geographical Location

Vitebsk region is one of the picturesque corners of Europe. It is hard to find an equal to it in beauty, uniqueness of fauna and flora, and richness of protected areas. Ancient coniferous forests occupy 60% of the entire forest-covered territory. The highest forest cover is characteristic of Rossonsky, Polotsky, Lepelsky, Dokshitsky, Gorodoksky districts.

The region is located in the northeast of Belarus in the middle reaches of the Western Dvina and the upper reaches of the Dnieper. In the east, it borders on the Smolensk region, in the north – on the Pskov region of the Russian Federation, in the northwest – on Latvia, in the west – on Lithuania and the Grodno region, in the south – on the Minsk and Mogilev regions of the Republic of Belarus.

The length of the borders from east to west is over 300 km, from north to south – 175 km. In terms of territory, the region is larger than such countries as Albania, El Salvador, Moldova, and Armenia.
