Today, in the village of Chernoruchye, a mournful ceremony of reburial of 358 remains of civilians and prisoners of war, exterminated by the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War, is taking place. It has been established that among the deceased are at least 57 women and at least 7 children.

- Pain, fear, tears – we are all familiar with these feelings, – said the prosecutor of the Vitebsk region, Andrei Skurat. – But we will never understand what these people, whose remains we are reburying, went through. These civilians wanted to live on their land, grow crops, and raise children. But those came who decided otherwise for them. Beasts in grey uniforms came to our land and decided that 75% of the population should be exterminated, and the remaining 25% should be slaves to serve the Aryan race. And only thanks to the courage, heroism, resilience, and unity of our ancestors did we achieve victory.

The head of the supervisory authority of Vitebsk region recalled that the Prosecutor General's Office has been investigating a criminal case on the genocide of the Belarusian people for 5 years.

- This is being done to restore historical justice, to prevent our history from being distorted and rewritten, – emphasized Andrei Skurat. – This is being done to preserve the historical memory of the terrible, tragic, and at the same time heroic pages of history. And this memory is vitally important for our children and grandchildren, so that they remember and know at what cost the peaceful sky above their heads was achieved.

This mass burial has become one of the most large-scale testimonies of the genocide of the Belarusian people discovered in the region recently. The key evidence for the discovery of the mass burial was the recollections of one of the residents of Lepel. Being a ten-year-old child, he saw how the occupiers took people to the outskirts of the city for execution. He managed to share his memories in 2003 in the pages of the newspaper "Lepel Krai". The data was confirmed by local historians, as well as archival materials.
Field work was carried out by the 52nd Separate Specialized Search Battalion last year.
