In the Ushachy district, the remains of civilians killed during the Great Patriotic War were reburied
The district prosecutor Maksim Podvorny interrogated a local resident A., born in 1928, who explained that she came to the village of Zabornovo in 1946. She knows about the events of May 1944 from her deceased husband.
The woman said that a burial site is located across the road from her house. Villagers said that 12 people were buried there – they were killed by fascists in early May 1944. This place was not marked before and was considered unrecorded.
Excavations and an inspection of the scene were carried out on the site, and the remains of 8 people were found and seized. Preliminary results confirmed the information provided by the witness during interrogation.
The mourning ceremony was attended by: Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Council of Deputies Vladimir Terentyev, Deputy Prosecutor of Vitebsk Region Georgy Korenko, Prosecutor of Ushachi District Maksim Podvorny, district leadership, representatives of the church of the Holy Martyrs Minodora, Nymphodora, Mitrodora, the veteran organization, students, and others.
For reference. In total, during the occupation, 53 settlements and over 3.5 thousand civilians were destroyed in the Ushachi district. More than 1.8 thousand residents were taken to Germany.
Today, 12 former prisoners live in the district, and 38 burial sites of war victims and military graves have been officially identified. Thousands of our countrymen killed by fascists are buried there.
The Prosecutor's Office of the Vitebsk Region has studied hundreds of archival documents and interrogated about two and a half thousand citizens. More than 130 previously unknown burial sites of the civilian population have already been found and inspected in the Vitebsk region.
