The Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee discussed the readiness of services for the spring flood
The regional executive committee discussed the readiness of services to respond to possible negative consequences of the spring flood. As the head of the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations, Sergey Meshkin, recalled, the events of 2023 made it possible to identify the most vulnerable areas and build systematic work to prevent emergencies.
It was the 2023 flood that indicated the areas at risk. Today, these territories are under special control of rescuers, and the population is informed in advance about the developing situation and possible consequences of the water element.
Given the significant amount of snowfall, an increase in the water level in the Western Dvina is observed. A rise in water to dangerously high levels is expected, which may lead to flooding of settlements in the Gorodok, Verkhnedvinsk, Miory, and Polotsk districts. Continuous monitoring of the hydrological situation is underway, and citizens are already reporting flooding of household plots and basements.
– As part of the assignment of the head of the region, checks of readiness were organized and conducted in the Gorodok and Verkhnedvinsk districts. The Ministry of Emergency Situations is ready to perform the tasks set during a possible flood, – noted Sergey Meshkin.
A set of security measures is being implemented in the region. A list of residential buildings and road sections that may be flooded has been identified, and they are constantly monitored. 16 ice jam and blockage sections of rivers have been identified, where blasting operations may be carried out to clear the water area of ice if necessary. Tactical special exercises are planned in 12 flood-prone districts.
Housing and communal services are clearing storm drains and drainage systems of snow and ice, and flushing culverts.
Two consolidated detachments equipped with engineering equipment, watercraft, and necessary equipment have been created in the region.
Rescuers remind: in case of a potential flooding, you should try to move furniture and household appliances to higher ground, consider food supplies and a stock of medicines in case of refusal to evacuate.
The spring flood is under control – the region's services are ready for any scenario.
