Over the past 5 years, the number of murders, road traffic fatalities, and fire deaths has decreased in the Vitebsk region

The right to life is the most important of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus. The state has undertaken the obligation to ensure the protection of human life from any unlawful encroachments. In this regard, the closest attention is paid to the problem of citizen deaths, the causes and conditions that led to each specific tragedy.

The prosecutor's office is entrusted with the coordinating role in crime prevention and the fight against crime. Prosecutors constantly require the maximum participation of all interested departments in solving the task of protecting human life not only from criminal encroachments but also from accidents. The work carried out in this direction allows for prompt response to identified violations and systemic shortcomings in the work carried out locally.

The Prosecutor's Office of the Vitebsk Region annually summarizes the causes and conditions of citizen deaths in the supervised territory, analyzing not only the results of supervisory activities but also the effectiveness of the work of all prevention subjects.

It should be noted that over the past five years, the number of murders in the Vitebsk region has decreased by more than half, the number of deaths in road traffic accidents and fires has decreased by almost the same amount, and the number of citizens who died as a result of drowning and industrial accidents has decreased by almost a third.

At the same time, the number of people dying from alcohol poisoning remains consistently high (more than 200 people annually). Moreover, alcohol continues to be a companion to a significant number of accidents and crimes.

As practice shows, today, persons abusing alcohol constitute the most problematic and one of the most difficult categories of citizens to prevent.

Despite this, the further application and improvement of a comprehensive approach to the implementation of socio-economic and preventive measures can lead to a stable positive result, expressed in a decrease in the number of

citizens who died from external causes. In April 2018, this issue is planned to be considered at a coordination meeting at the Vitebsk Regional Prosecutor's Office.
